The general lighting inside the coaches is provided by 110V DC or 110V AC supply. The supply system is backed up by battery system of 110V DC for self-generation type coaches. During extreme emergencies like derailment, accidents etc. sometimes these supply system fail, causing total darkness inside the coach. To facilitate easy, exist of passenger and their immediate rescue during such emergencies, this Emergency Light unit is developed to provide illumination during failure of all other power supplies inside the coach. These emergency lights are provided inside the conventional and LHB type AC and Non AC coaches and on doorways of these coaches, which would switch 'on' automatically in the event of failure of normal supply system. Hence reliability of Emergency Light Unit is of paramount importance.



  • The emergency light switches 'on' automatically in case normal battery system of the coach fails during any unforeseen circumstances.
  • The system works in extreme dusty, foggy, and desert terrain conditions in certain areas.
  • Each emergency unit contains Sealed Lead Acid Maintenance Free type (SMF) Battery of 7Ah capacity.
  • The battery is charged at 13.5V +/- 0.1V in floating mode.
  • In order to keep the battery in healthy condition the emergency light stops working as soon as the battery voltage reduces to 10.5V.
  • There should be a provision for cyclic discharge of battery by 20% of its rated capacity to a maximum time of 4/5 hours automatically by its control circuit at a regular interval of 15 days to improve the life of the battery.
